The first day of summer!

The kids have a calender in their room that we cross off each day and write down special things on certain days etc. When we turned the month to June, Carson asked me to tell him what was written on some of the days, they were "Father's Day, Flag Day, the First Day of Summer" and so on. He was all excited when I said, "the first day of summer." He asked, "Mom, is summer when we have watermelon, and go swimming in the pool?" I said yes, because those are things you generally do sometime during the summer. Little did I know he had a plan...
When the day came (June 20th) Carson was SO excited! In the morning he told me we had to go to the store and get some watermelon. When I asked why he said, "because, mom, today is the first day of summer and we have to swim in the pool and eat watermelon!!!" At first I tried to explain that we didn't do those things at the same time and that today was actually too cold for swimming- that we just do those things sometime during the summer. After seeing his face and much more convincing on his part, I gave in...we went and got a watermelon, I cut up a huge bowl, and they ate it all...WHILE they were swimming in the pool...on a 74 degree day...AND THEY LOVED IT!! I have never celebrated the first day of summer but this may have to become a tradition :)
This little face just had to be shared! I had given Graham a granola bar (a chocowalla odwalla bar- which he LOVES!) and this is what he looked like after, CU-T-PIE!

Who needs leaves in the fall when you get the Sunday paper full of adds? The kids had a great time with the paper this last Sunday! They ripped it, crinkled it, threw it up in the air, threw it at each other, made a pile and jumped in it, made "paper" angels (like snow angels)...etc, it was a great time had by all!

Graham was a little confused as to why I went and set him in the middle of it, but believe me when the camera wasn't there he was playing with it like the rest of 'em.

I like that idea- celebrating the first day of summer. Of course it was cloudy here.. but not too cold- but maybe too cold for a pool trip. I also love the newspaper pics-- I let my kids have at my big stack of scrapbooking magazines- they cut and had so much fun decorating our house with the pictures. Just goes to show you that kids don't need toys to entertain themselves.

By the way, we will be around the 4th weekend- we might be out doing famiy stuff- but give us a call or stop by! I would LOVE to see you!

It's hard to remember that in other parts of the country it's still not HOT!! It's funny what you get used to. We use to live in such a cold place now where we live it just goes from warm-hot.
Cute idea to do with the kids. Such a fun mom! HAPPY SUMMER!
